Why you should feed your dog with a raised dog feeder

by Geryn Evans

Have you ever wondered what your dog is thinking about during dinner time? We are pretty confident that your pooch is probably very excited, but when they tuck into their favourite food, is it a comfortable experience?

Veterinarians recommend that dogs should actually eat from a raised dog feeder instead of using a traditional bowl on the floor.

When a dog eats from a bowl on the floor his neck is fully extended which means they have to swallow food up their oesophagus. This is uncomfortable for the dog and is not a healthy position for them to consume their food. If you give your dog a bone to chew you will see that they normally lay down and this is because they can avoid pressure on their neck, spine and joints.

With that in the mind, a raised dog feeder allows the dog to eat their food comfortably and encourages a better posture, which in turn helps their digestion.

Alongside this immediate benefit to your dog there are many other reasons why you should feed your dog with a raised dog feeder.

1. Health benefits for all dogs

We understand that looking after your dog’s health is your number one priority and a raised dog feeder can go a long way to helping them. It puts less strain on their neck, hips and shoulders which is incredibly important if your dog has arthritis or suffering from old age. Dog breeds prone to arthritis include:

  • German Shepherds
  • Golden Retrievers
  • Labradors
  • Dachshunds
  • Newfoundlands
  • Bernards
  • Rottweilers
  • Mastiffs

The raised feeder also encourages food to travel to their stomachs far easier, which will prevent any stomach problems in later life.

2. Raised dog feeder is cleaner in the home

A raised dog feeder is a lot more hygienic as it prevents food from ending up on the floor and then creating a bacteria breeding zone. As the food is more likely to stay within the bowl, this makes it easier to clean up after your dog has finished eating. We can’t guarantee that there won’t be some mess, (we all know that dogs get excitable around food!) but it will definitely minimise the amount of cleaning required!

3. Helpful for you!

If you are tired of bending down and picking up your dog’s bowl then a raised food bowl will avoid this. You won’t need to keep bending down to fill it up which will then put less strain on your back. In our experience dog owners prefer a raised dog feeder as it can make a big difference to their daily routines. Consequently, the raised dog feeder is not only beneficial to the dog, but the owner too!
